Beyond the Bob Willard Collection, Volume 3
The small redwood cottage in Woodside had no heat, and no insulation. There were no electrical wire baseboards, and there was no forced air.
There were, however, a number of cracks between the vertical redwood plank boards that served both as the interior, and the exterior, walls. The cracks were just wide enough for healthy, green vines to grow through them, climbing up toward the pitched ceiling. There was evidence that someone had tried to do something about it, long ago.
Cradled into a comfortable nook, the single bed was elevated to perfect window height, and just below the bough of a one hundred year old scrub oak. It was all quite charming. A Brothers Grimm storybook cottage. That became a Brothers Grimm faery tale. It had its magic. And it was the best place that I had ever lived.
What happened inside of that storybook cottage, with flowering vines growing up its inside walls, re-directed two lives. The late-November torrential downpour played an unexpected role...

The mind of a child is a sponge of tissue that absorbs all things that are fearful, threatening, and just oddly out of the ordinary.
Yet, some of the most disruptive fears germinate from
inside the mind itself.
Are these fears imagined? Sometimes.
Are they exaggerated? Probably.
Are they alive and breathing? Absolutely!

Part I
Childhood fears do not usually last for an entire lifetime. The majority of them are in the rearview mirror by ages ten or eleven, after they have diminished to become childish fears... and then later still, continue to fade even more so until they are no longer fears at all.
But the reality for most of us is that the holes left behind by the evacuated childhood fears fill up with new fears... and then those new fears gradually fade away, and then even newer fears threaten, and this continues throughout the seesaw of life until the holes at the very end, the last years on the seesaw, get succumbed by the Devastating Issues of Old Age.
And those Devastating Issues can be deadly. ABCD-EAD. The end is near and approaches steadily through the cold rain like locomotive headlamps! What do you need to look out for?
